Nigeria's electricity supply is set to receive a significant boost, with an additional 150 megawatts to be added to the national grid by the end of 2024. This announcement was made by the Minister of Power, Adebayo Adelabu, following a meeting between President Bola Tinubu and German President Frank-Walter Steinmeier at the Presidential Villa in Abuja.
Adelabu highlighted the progress made under the Siemens-led Presidential Power Initiative (PPI), revealing that 80% of the pilot stage has been completed. This includes the importation, installation, and commissioning of 10 power transformers and 10 mobile substations, which have already contributed 750 megawatts to Nigeria's grid capacity.
"By the end of this year, we expect an additional 150 megawatts to be added upon the full completion of the pilot phase," Adelabu stated. He emphasized the importance of the Siemens project in addressing Nigeria’s aging and fragile power infrastructure, which has long hindered the country’s energy sector.
The next phase of the project will focus on rehabilitating 14 existing substations and constructing 23 new ones across the country. Adelabu also noted that the first batch of commercial agreements for Phase One of the project has already been concluded, marking a crucial step in the ongoing improvements to Nigeria's power infrastructure.
