The former governor of Delta State, James Ibori, has arrived in London where he will face trial for corruption and money laundering.
A Metropolitan Police Service spokesperson said that the former governor, 48, arrived in the UK on a flight from the United Arab Emirates to London, Heathrow, escorted by officers from the Metropolitan Police Service's Extradition Unit.
He had previously been detained in the UAE at the request of the Metropolitan Police Service (MPS) on suspicion of money laundering and conspiracy to defraud.
The spokesperson, who did not say when Mr Ibori would be arraigned in court, said on his arrival in the UK, the former governor was taken to a West London police station where he remains in custody. The London Metropolitan Police had launched a manhunt for Mr Ibori for money laundering offences.
By refusing to cooperate with investigators and releasing critical documentary evidence, former attorney-general and minister of justice, Mike Aondoakaa, frustrated efforts by the Met to successfully prosecute the former governor in the UK. The former governor also made frantic efforts to stop his extradition to the UK from the UAE.
Already, his wife, his mistress, his sister, and his lawyer have all been convicted in the UK for helping him (Mr Ibori) to launder money belonging to Delta State. The former governor is also wanted by Nigeria's Economic and Financial Crimes Commission for stealing funds belonging to Delta State, which he ruled for eight years.
