I think it is a necessity. Not because of stone or bragging about it. But because it shows that you belong to someone, someone you love, you care, you cherish, someone you respect and someone you want to make happy for rest of his/her life.

Basically the ring doesn't prove anything or show anything ..... except that you are one with other person.
