The Labour party gubernatorial candidate in Adamawa State, Adamu Mua’zu Modibbo has apologised for his statement that the Federal Medical Centre, Yola was a theatre of death and that eight babies died in the hospital’s incubator due to power outage.

Mr Modibbo who had then blamed the incident on the state government’s neglect of the health sector, also claimed that the high mortality record of the hospital had forced patients to go elsewhere for medical care. But Mr. Modibbo, in a recent letter to the Chief Medical Director of the Federal Medical Centre, Ali Danburam, said he regretted the statement, saying his comments were meant for the state government’s specialist hospital.

Mr Ali, who acknowledged the apology, said he had received a deluge of calls from across the state as a result of the statement. “People were calling me to find out about the statement they just heard,” he said. “I had to assure them, telling them the person must have been mistaken because our health institution still remains a centre of excellence.” The medical officer said he was relieved that he has been vindicated.

“Hardly do Nigeria politicians ever admit to wrong doing, especially having to retract a statement made under campaign klieglights,” he said. “He personally called to apologise and was also here with me. Our track record as an institution, I believe is what has made this possible.” The institution had been designated a 3-star institution and is one of a few government-owned health centres so recognised by a presidential monitoring and evaluation team.

Targeting government

Mr Modibbo has been a fierce critic of the Murtala Nyako administration, especially during his fiery campaigns. Earlier, last week, the deputy speaker of the state House of Assembly, Moh’d Hassan Turaki, had taken the politician to task over comments credited to him concerning power outage in the deputy speaker’s constituency while he was away on Hajj.

The labour candidate had said the delay in replacing the blown transformer was due to the government’s unresponsiveness to the people’s welfare and that transformers were not readily available in the state. Mr. Turaki however said the delay was due to freight issues and called on members of his constituency to ignore the politician’s comments.
