Two farmers were brutally murdered by suspected kidnappers in Odo-Ape, a community in Kabba-Bunu Local Government Area of Kogi State, plunging the area into mourning and heightened tension. The tragic incident occurred on Friday while the victims were tending to their farms.
The deceased farmers, identified as Mr. Black, a Tiv man, and Sunday Aiyedero, were reportedly attacked by unidentified gunmen, leaving the community in fear of further assaults. Sources within Odo-Ape disclosed that the killings have sparked outrage, prompting protests by local youths.
On Saturday morning, scores of angry youths took to the streets, blocking the Odo-Ape to Obajana-Lokoja highway. The protest, which disrupted vehicular movement for hours, was only quelled after the intervention of security agencies.
"We are demanding urgent action from the government to ensure the safety of our community and justice for the victims," one protester said. "The families of the deceased need support, and the authorities must prioritize the security of Kabba-Bunu residents."
Efforts to reach Kogi State Police Command's spokesperson, Mr. Williams Ovye Aya, for comments were unsuccessful, as he did not respond to messages as of the time of this report.
Meanwhile, the Chairman of Kabba-Bunu Local Government, Zacchaeus Dare, has vowed to restore peace to the troubled community. In a statement released through his media aide, Omofa John, Dare assured residents that those responsible for the killings would be brought to justice.
Similarly, Senator Sunday Karimi, representing Kogi West in the National Assembly, condemned the attack, promising comprehensive measures to protect lives and property in the district. "The killings of my people must stop," the lawmaker declared, pledging that this would be the last such incident in Odo-Ape.
Residents and leaders alike have called on the government to strengthen security in the area to prevent further bloodshed. The incident underscores the growing need for urgent action to address insecurity in Kogi State.
