A late-night fire on Friday consumed a twin three-bedroom flat in Ilorin, Kwara State, destroying all valuables in the property but thankfully leaving no fatalities.

The incident, which occurred at Sunnie Ododo in the Tanke Bubu area of Ilorin around 11:33 p.m., also left one person hospitalized with second-degree burns sustained while attempting to rescue his brother.

The building, owned by Adeoye Samuel, was reduced to rubble, prompting community members to appeal for financial assistance for the affected family. The chairman of the community, Muftau Amasa, expressed deep sorrow over the destruction and urged well-meaning individuals to support the victims.

The Kwara State Fire Service responded swiftly to the emergency after being alerted late. The service’s spokesman, Hassan Adekunle, detailed the efforts of the firefighting crew in a statement on Saturday.

“Upon arrival, we discovered that a twin three-bedroom flat was fully engulfed in flames due to the delayed alert. Our firefighters displayed exceptional professionalism and successfully contained the fire, preventing it from spreading to nearby buildings. However, the inferno consumed the entire property, including three rooms in the boys’ quarters,” the statement read.

The operation lasted several hours, requiring the replenishment of water supplies from the brigade headquarters to tackle the intensity of the blaze.

Preliminary investigations attributed the cause of the fire to a power surge.

The Director of the Kwara State Fire Service, Prince Falade John Olumuyiwa, expressed sympathy for the affected residents. He emphasized the importance of adhering to fire safety measures and urged the public to report fire incidents promptly to reduce damage.

He reiterated the need for electrical precautionary measures and provided emergency hotlines—08030419316, 112, and 08025896740—for immediate assistance in similar emergencies.

The incident serves as a reminder of the devastating impact of fire outbreaks and the critical role of timely intervention in mitigating losses.
