The Caretaker Chairman of Oredo Local Government, Edo State, Ekpen Erediauwa, was on Saturday allegedly beaten up by the Chairman of the Edo State Task Force on Petroleum Monitoring Committee, Osakpamwa Eriyo, following a disagreement on how to share the revenue collected from the traders in the council.

It was learnt that the incident happened at Uwa area of the state capital, Benin, when leaders of the Action Congress of Nigeria held a meeting to discuss Tuesday’s rally of the party and strategise ahead of the April general elections.

Trouble was said to have started when Osakpamwa, who also doubles as the state youth leader of the ACN, raised the issue of revenue with the LG boss. It was said that the leaders of the party at the meeting reminded Osakpamwa that the issue he raised was not the reason they scheduled the meeting.

It was gathered that the council boss and Osakpamwa, who is also leader of the National Union of Road Transport Employees in the state, had been at loggerheads over who had the right to collect revenue from areas around the council secretariat, including the Oba Market area and motor parks in the area.

A source, who craved anonymity, told our correspondent that Osakpamwa, who collects about N15m monthly revenue in the council, offered to remit N700,000 to the latter, which was rejected by Erediauwa.

Sources said Osakpamwan, during the meeting repeatedly raised his voice against the council chairman over the issue, forcing the latter to warn him against shouting at him. Pandemonium was said to have broken out as Osakpamwan allegedly pounced on the chairman, tearing his clothes into shreds, while leaders of the party took to their heels.

As at the time of filing this report, Erediauwa had petitioned the police area command on the alleged assault on his person by Osakpamwa.

Jim Adun, a close aide to the council boss, lamented that the ugly incident occurred when a meeting was held to discuss the forthcoming elections.

Another eye witness, however, claimed that the meeting was called by the leadership of the party in Oredo to discuss issues bordering on the non-remittance of monies accruing to the council from motor parks within the council.

“Osakpamwan was so angered by the turn of events, and he walked straight to the prince who was about entering his Element Jeep; dragged him out of the vehicle with his shirt tearing in the process. The attack on the prince became uncontrollable as it was joined by others to cause more harm on the prince as they shattered the windscreen of his Element Jeep.”

Osakpamwan, however, denied beating up the LG chairman, saying he could not have done such a thing.

Osakpamwan, in a reaction said, “That is not true. I could not have done such a thing; it is outright falsehood.”
