Why is abortion such a hot potato that once in the mouth you can’t swallow because it will burn your throat and you don’t want to spit it out and lose it because it is too sweet! My good friend, Joseph, has run to me puffing great gulfs of air from enlarged nostrils. He was out of his depth. He married his university sweetheart, Agnes, less than three months ago amidst great fanfare. Agnes is a corporate lawyer who travels extensively with great career prospects ahead of her and Joseph, an only child of his aged parents is a highly paid company executive. They planned to start a family in about three years’ time when Agnes would have consolidated her career path, much to the disapproval of Joseph’s parents who want to see their grandchild before answering the Lord’s call. However, during their honeymoon they had too much to drink and had a wild unprotected sex. Agnes is now 8 weeks pregnant to the jubilation and delight of Joseph’s parents. However, Agnes is now insisting on having abortion because any child bearing now would jeopardise her career prospects, something she had worked hard for all her life. In 3 years time she would have reached the apex of her career in the company and would be able to start a family then but not before. Further, it is her body and she has superior right over her husband. But Joseph being an only child and a committed, staunch member of the catholic faith will not hear of it. Furthermore, that God in his infinite mercy has answered his parents’ cry for a grandchild and that abortion would send his parents to early grave.
So, pals should a woman have absolute right over her body even if it means disobeying her husband? Is this 8 weeks foetus a human being? If so, has this defenceless and silent victim any superior right over his mother’s?

@ poster, some women will disagree with you. Nowadays women value their career or profession and independence. Marriage seems to have lost it's traditional value of 'to serve and obey' thy husband. In America, abortion is very divisive issue. In the present context however, I think it is wrong for a married woman to have abortion against her husband's wishes.

@ tundamartin, I refer to my comments above about the foetus not being human as it is entirely dependent on the woman's life. However consider this : The concept of personhood is different from the concept of human life. Human life occurs at conception, but fertilized eggs used for in vitro fertilization are also human lives and those not implanted are routinely thrown away. Is this murder, and if not, then how is abortion murder?
