Nigeria’s military spokesmen have confirmed that two Nigerian soldiers were involved in the kidnapping of the father of Chelsea midfielder John Obi Mikel.
Nigeria’s military and security agencies said Thursday in a joint statement that Pvt. Jaduwa Thlama had been dismissed from the army over the Aug. 12 abduction of Michael Obi as he drove home from work in the central Nigerian city of Jos. The statement said Sgt. Victor Essien will face a “higher prosecuting authority” from the military for his role in the plot.
Kidnappers took Mikel’s father to Kano, where police later freed him and arrested six suspected kidnappers. Police later said the kidnappers demanded $4 billion from the Chelsea star, at one point saying they considered the price “chicken change” for the English Premier League player.
