Mrs. Deborah Ojeniyi, a pregnant woman residing in Lagos, has raised concerns following the arrest of her husband by officers of the Nigeria Police Force from the Amuwo Odofin Police Post. The incident occurred during a raid on a hospital on Saturday night.
Mrs. Ojeniyi recounted that she and her husband were visiting the Restore Health Clinic in Amuwo Odofin to see her husband's ailing twin brother, who was undergoing treatment. Around 9 p.m., approximately five police officers arrived in a shuttle bus and began arresting individuals outside the hospital, including her husband.
According to Mrs. Ojeniyi, the police officers did not provide a reason for her husband's arrest. When they inquired about the arrest, the officers allegedly responded by shooting into the air and threatening her husband. One officer reportedly said, "This is not EndSARS, police are angry. If you do anyhow, I will scatter your leg. Government is not doing us well.”
Desperate to prove their innocence, Mrs. Ojeniyi brought her husband's ailing twin brother to the police station for confirmation, but they were chased away amidst more gunfire.
Mrs. Ojeniyi, speaking from the police station, shared her frustration with SaharaReporters. Despite her repeated pleas, the police have not provided any information or released her husband.
“Last night my husband and I went to the hospital to see his twin brother. Police came to raid the area, we heard noise outside and my husband stepped outside to see what was happening. Next thing, they took him," she recounted.
“He’s presently at Amuwo Odofin police post, Second Rainbow. The police officers kept shooting at us and chasing us. I explained to them that I am a pregnant woman and they should have pity on me. We were chased away; they refused to release my husband," she continued.
The police officers allegedly claimed that they were not under the FESTAC jurisdiction but Ikeja jurisdiction, and mentioned they were acting on a report about marijuana use in the area. However, the hospital remained open and its staff were not detained.
Mrs. Ojeniyi expressed additional concern, mentioning, “I have not seen him to be sure he was beaten but I saw them beat a woman up last night. They picked her up from the area too. She’s a hairstylist.”
SaharaReporters' attempts to contact the Lagos Police Command for comments were unsuccessful. The Public Relations Officer, SP Benjamin Hundeyin, did not respond to multiple calls and only replied briefly on WhatsApp, stating, "Sorry I am unavailable right now."
