According to them, renaming University of Lagos after Abiola by the Federal Government was an insult to Nigerians.
They called for the prosecution of those behind the annulment of the June 12, 1993 presidential elections, including former military President Gen. Ibrahim Babangida.
In separate interviews with National Mirror in Kaduna, the governor of old Kaduna State, Alhaji Balarabe Musa, said Abiola was the legitimate elected president and therefore should be addressed as a late president.
He said: “The Federal Government should declare him the winner now, renaming University of Lagos after the late MKO Abiola is an insult to this nation. The then National Electoral Commission (NEC) Chairman later admitted that Chief MKO Abiola won the election, therefore the present INEC should declare him the winner of 1993 presidential election.
“Apart from that, a judiciary commission of enquiry should be established by the Federal Government to find out why that election was annulled and should arrest and prosecute those behind the action.
“The Head of State who conducted the election too should be prosecuted. President Goodluck Jonathan’s actions on the late MKO Abiola is totally condemnable, this is the man whom Nigerians voted into power, all other presidents came through rigging.”
To the President of Civil Rights Congress of Nigeria (CRCN), Mallam Shehu Sani, renaming University of Lagos after the late politian portrayed him as a sectional leader.
Shehu Sani said full presidential honour should be given to him as late president.
He said: “There is nothing too big for honoring Chief MKO Abiola; this man is a symbol of democracy in this country. No honour will be big for him. President Goodluck Jonathan should have consulted widely before naming University of Lagos after Chief MKO Abiola.
“To me, President Jonathan should have named the National Assembly, National Stadium or University of Abuja after Chief MKO Abiola. Naming the University of Lagos after him by the Federal Government portrays the late Abiola as a sectional leader which he was not.
“There is need for INEC to go ahead and announce that 1993 presidential elections in honour of the late Chief Abiola and should be given full recognition as former president of this country.”
