Consumers of Liquefied Natural Gas (LPG), otherwise known as Cooking Gas in the country, are facing imminent danger as an off-specification product is being imported from Niger Republic to flood the Nigerian market.

This product, it was learnt, has higher proportion of highly explosive propane than the LPG that is sourced from the Nigeria Liquefied Natural Gas (NLNG) Limited and the refineries, which consists mostly of less dangerous butane.

It was also gathered that the LPG imported from Niger Republic is cheaper than the ones sourced from the refineries and the Nigeria LNG Limited.

Confirming the circulation of the dangerous LPG during its Annual General Meeting (AGM) in Lagos on Tuesday, the Nigerian Association of LPG Marketers (NALPGMA) warned its members not to patronise the LPG from Niger because of the imminent danger it posed to users.
Speaking on the dangers posed by the product from Niger Republic, the National President of the Liquefied Petroleum Gas Reps Association of Nigeria, Mr. Odo Gbolahan, stated that the pressure of the gas imported from Niger was four times the pressure of the cooking gas used in Nigeria.

Gbolahan stated that while the pressure of the LPG suitable for the Nigerian environment was 5 bars, the pressure of the LPG imported from Niger Republic was 15 bars. According to him, the LPG produced in Nigeria is mostly butane, while the product imported from Niger consists of highly-explosive propane.

He said the LPG from Niger could lead to explosion of cylinders and other LPG facilities because of its high pressure.

“The propane gas they are bringing from the Niger axis is four times the pressure of the gas that is meant to be used in Nigeria. The propane gas is meant to be used in the western world with cold climate because the rate at which the LPG will be evaporating in that place is very low. The propane is not meant for Nigeria with hot climate because the pressure can burst cylinders and hoses,” he said.

“We welcome and recognise the importers of LPG through the landed border because they help to crash the price in the local market. This is because the ones they are bringing from that axis are very cheap. But at the same time, the welfare of our people should be more important to us than the money anybody is making,” Gbolahan added.

Gbolahan said he believed in carrying out his business under a competitive environment but noted that the composition of the LPG being imported from Niger Republic was highly dangerous.
He stated that because of the poor quality of the LPG, the product was being sold at cheap prices in Nigeria.

The out-going President of NALPGMA, Mr. Mouruff Adesina Onabule, stated that some marketers use the cheap LPG from Niger Republic to ‘blend’ the more expensive ones from Nigeria to make huge profit, without minding the threat to safety.

Onabule warned members of NALPGMA to shun the LPG imported through Niger axis. He acknowledged that the LPG currently being supplied by the NLNG was very expensive and called on the Federal Government to intervene to crash the price.http://serving.thisdaylive.com/0bef99d6-acf5-4e2c-9779-8fa02ba3fcd4/assets/gas-cylinders.jpg?maxwidth=400&maxheight=540
