A statement signed by the agency said the development followed the arrest of a South African Airways’ manager, Mr. Michael Adebulehin, 46, and a Nigerian Aviation Handling Company Plc’s baggage officer, Mr. Hakeem Olude, 39, over an attempt to smuggle a bag containing 500 grammes of cocaine imported from Brazil out of the airport.
According to the statement, which was signed by the Head, Public Affairs, NDLEA, Mr. Mitchell Ofoyeju, the suspects were believed to have links with major drug traffickers in Brazil.
The arrest came a few days after the Chief Executive Officer of the anti-narcotic agency, Alhaji Ahmadu Giade, declared that his agency had focused its searchlight on the Nigeria-Brazil drug trafficking route.
Giade, who described the suspects’ action as an act of national sabotage, said they would be prosecuted in line with the agency’s Act to serve as a deterrent to others.
The agency said that Adebulehin, a suspected member of the MMIA drug ring, had worked with South Africa Airways for eight years.
He is currently the Passenger Service Baggage Manager, according to the statement. He is married with three children and hails from Ekiti State.
Olude, another suspected member of the MMIA drug ring, works with NAHCO as a baggage officer. He was first intercepted at the arrival hall with the bag, according to the anti-narcotic agency.
Olude, however, told NDLEA operatives that he was sent to pick up the bag by one Adebulehin who is the South Africa Airways’ baggage manager.
He hails from Abeokuta, Ogun State
The case is being investigated, according to the agency.
