Every other day, there’s news about a delayed or cancelled flight and if you fly often, you probably have been a victim of this. Now, more than ever, people are asking to be compensated for any inconvenience caused by the airlines. This has brought companies like Flightright into the limelight as they fight for air passengers’ rights. If you have ever found yourself in such situations, we understand that you may have questions. This is why we have curated a few frequently asked questions about flight delays and cancellations.

1. Why is My Flight Delayed or Cancelled?
There are several reasons why your flight could have been delayed or cancelled. This can either be within the airline’s control or completely out of its control. The most common reasons include lack of crew or pilot, aircraft not fit to fly, security issues, bad weather conditions, staff on strike, lack of adequate passengers, pilot unfit to fly, mechanical issues, and more.

If you feel your flight has been disrupted for an unjust reason, you can always reach out to the airline to find out why. Not every reason is valid and also, you may be entitled to some form of compensation, as we will highlight in the next point.

2. Am I Entitled to Any Form of Flight Compensation?
No one can dispute how a flight delay or cancellation can disrupt your entire travel plans. As a result, you have the EU 261/2004 regulation to protect you in such cases. This is however dependent on certain factors. To begin with, you have to be sure that your flight is departing from an EU member state or landing in one, with the airline headquartered in the EU. This is the only way the regulation protects you. In addition, the reason for the disruption has to be within the airline’s control, which most of the time is the case. You also must have been informed of the flight disruption less than 2 weeks before the originally planned date.

As long as you meet the criteria and have a valid booking ticket, you can take extra steps to ensure you are well compensated.

3. What Does the Flight Compensation Cover?
Under the EC 261 regulation, you are entitled to monetary compensation of up to €600 which is calculated based on the flight distance. While a short distance under 1500 km would attract €250, a medium distance would attract €400, and a long distance, €600. This is regardless of the price of the ticket. In addition, you will also be entitled to complimentary food and drinks for a delay of at least two hours and a free hotel booking if you have to spend the night at the airport. Should the flight delay be longer than 5 hours, you can reschedule your flight at no cost to you or request a refund.

Bottom Line
Many people are not aware of their rights when their flight is delayed or cancelled. However, you can start from somewhere by first familiarising yourself with these commonly asked questions and answers. Knowing the EC 261 regulation and reach out to companies like Flightright that can help make the process seamless for you.
