A female soldier has killed a senior colleague at a checkpoint in Yola, Adamawa State, in Northeast Nigeria.

The soldier, according to the report, was enforcing the curfew imposed by the Adamawa State government.

Recall that Gov Ahmadu Fintiri, the Adamawa State governor, imposed the curfew after hoodlums broke into a government warehouse and looted several items, including palliatives meant to cushion the effect of fuel subsidy.

According to the report, the female soldier identified as Lance Corporal Nkiru shot a captain who attempted to intervene in her altercation with civilians at Fire Service Roundabout in Yola.

The female soldier reportedly insisted that motorists, including workers on essential duty, coming home during the curfew hours must turn back.

“Some people stopped at the checkpoint explained themselves as workers on essential duties, but the female soldier insisted they must turn back. A captain came forward to intervene. Unfortunately, she had already cocked her rifle, so she just fired and killed him accidentally,” a security officer stated.

The victim was confirmed dead at the Federal Medical Centre, Yola, while the suspect was instantly arrested and whisked away by soldiers.

Their jobs can be challenging and accidents happen I know that, but there are rules of engagement and I expected her to have been taught that in the military. Even where there is 24hrs curfew, workers on essential duties who properly identify themselves should be allowed free movement. How can she not know that??

These things are spelt out. Workers on essential duties are exempted. Why will she cock her gun? Are we in any sort of war? She is just a wicked lady and also power drunk, a candidate for the gallows.

The soldier is acting on instruction, from the executive governor.  I assume the captain wanted to show himself as a superior commissioned  officer over the  NCO  to intervene for those presumed to be on ' essential duty' which some of them might use to violate the order. To avoid such flimsy excuses, the NCO maintained strict order, however, the shooting was accidental discharge , not meant to kill the officer as such, not a murder case. COs and NCOs should be careful on how they intervene on check points, it could be risky.
