In a bizarre revelation, officials from the New Orleans Police Department (NOPD) have shed light on a peculiar predicament plaguing their headquarters: rats allegedly indulging in marijuana stored within the evidence room, leading to an unexpected "high."

Police Superintendent Anne Kirkpatrick brought attention to the issue during a recent session with the City Council's Criminal Justice Committee, where she described the building as being overrun not only by rats and cockroaches but also by the apparent consumption of seized marijuana by the rodent population.

"The rats eating our marijuana, they’re all high," Kirkpatrick remarked, drawing attention to the unexpected consequence of the infestation.

The dire state of the headquarters has prompted discussions about a proposed $7.6 million plan to temporarily relocate the police headquarters to a leased space downtown for a period of 10 years while long-term solutions are explored. This move comes in light of the numerous challenges faced by the current building, including pest infestations and structural issues.

Chairman of the Criminal Justice Committee, Oliver Thomas, acknowledged the deteriorating conditions, recalling instances where extreme temperatures rendered the building uninhabitable for officers and staff.

Gilbert Montano, the city’s chief administrative officer, presented the relocation proposal as a more cost-effective alternative to the estimated $30 million required for renovations to the existing headquarters.

However, the proposal's fate hinges on the approval of the full City Council, signaling a pivotal decision in addressing the NOPD's pressing infrastructure concerns.

While the notion of rodents experiencing the euphoric effects of cannabis raises eyebrows, scientific skepticism persists. Experts point out that raw cannabis contains inactive compounds that require heating to produce psychoactive effects, casting doubt on claims of rodent intoxication.
