Tension grips the offices of FirstNews as its Editor, Segun Olatunji, was forcibly taken from his home in Iyana Odo, Abule Egba, Lagos State, by gunmen suspected to be soldiers. The abduction, believed to be in connection with recent investigative reports published by the online platform, has sent shockwaves through the journalistic community.
Olatunji, a seasoned journalist and former Kaduna Bureau Chief of The PUNCH, was reportedly seized last Friday over articles that delved into sensitive matters involving government officials. The piece titled "Revealed: Defence Chief Running Office like Family Business – Public Interest Lawyers," drew attention to alleged improprieties within the defense establishment. Additionally, another report, "Exclusive: How Contractor, Company Stole N100bn, Laundered Funds for Top Govt Officials – Investigation," was mentioned as a possible catalyst for the abduction.
The swift and brazen abduction has left the newspaper staff reeling in fear, with concerns mounting over the safety and well-being of their colleague. Narrating the harrowing incident, Olatunji's wife, Abiodun, described how a group of armed men, numbering 10, descended on their residence around 6 pm, whisking her husband away without explanation. Despite her inquiries, the men remained tight-lipped, leaving behind a distraught family desperate for answers.
Daniel Iworiso-Markson, the Publisher of FirstNews, confirmed the distressing development, expressing dismay over Olatunji's disappearance. He lamented the lack of communication or formal invitation for questioning prior to the journalist's abduction, condemning the heavy-handed tactics employed.
As the search for Olatunji intensifies and his whereabouts remain unknown, the incident serves as a chilling reminder of the dangers faced by journalists striving to uncover the truth. The brazen assault on press freedom underscores the importance of safeguarding the fundamental principles of democracy and freedom of speech. The journalistic community stands united in solidarity, calling for Olatunji's immediate and safe return, while demanding accountability for those responsible for his abduction.
