In a recent development, a serving Senator, Benson Konbowei, representing Bayelsa Central, has been remanded in Kuje Correctional Centre by a High Court in Apo, Abuja, over allegations of forgery of the National Youth Service Corps (NYSC) exemption certificate.
The arraignment of Senator Konbowei took place on March 26, 2024, before Justice Christopher Oba, where he faced charges related to the purported forgery of a document titled ‘Certificate of Exemption’ bearing number 000256454 and dated July 4, 2008.
According to the Inspector General of Police, Konbowei's actions contravene Sections 366, 156, and 158 of the Penal Code Act CAP 532 Laws of the Federation of Nigeria 1990, making him liable to punishment under Section 364 of the same Act.
During the arraignment, the Senator pleaded not guilty to the charges and was granted temporary release pending the hearing of his bail application scheduled for Thursday, March 28, 2024.
Following a bail hearing, the court granted Senator Konbowei bail in the sum of N50 million with two sureties, who must possess landed properties with Certificates of Occupancy in the Federal Capital Territory.
However, despite the bail grant, Justice Oba ordered that the Senator be remanded in Kuje Correctional Centre until the conditions of his bail are fulfilled.
The court adjourned the matter till June 24, 25, and 27 for further hearing.
