The Economic and Financial Crimes Commission (EFCC) has brought forth a new 26-count charge against Godwin Emefiele, the erstwhile governor of the Central Bank of Nigeria (CBN), alleging misconduct and corruption during his tenure.
Emefiele is set to appear before Justice Rahman Oshodi of the Lagos High Court, Ikeja on Monday, April 8, where he will face charges spanning from accepting gratification to abusing his office for personal gain, all in violation of the Corrupt Practices Act of 2000.
The charges, obtained by Channels Television’s Judiciary Correspondent Shola Soyele, were filed on April 3 by EFCC Prosecutor Rotimi Oyedepo (SAN).
Among the counts listed, the first charge accuses Emefiele of directing arbitrary acts during his tenure as CBN Governor, specifically alleging that he allocated foreign exchange amounting to $2,136,391,737.33 without due process, which the EFCC contends prejudiced the rights of Nigerians.
This development marks another chapter in the ongoing legal saga surrounding Emefiele, whose previous tenure at the apex bank was marred by controversies and allegations of financial impropriety.
Emefiele's impending court appearance has heightened anticipation among legal observers and the public alike, as the EFCC seeks to hold accountable individuals accused of abusing their positions of power for personal gain.
