In a significant interception operation, operatives of the National Drug Law Enforcement Agency (NDLEA) thwarted the efforts of a suspected drug mule, Imran Taofeek Olalekan, at the Lagos airport on Wednesday, April 3, as he attempted to travel to Oman with contraband concealed in his luggage.
Femi Babafemi, spokesperson for the NDLEA, revealed in a statement issued on Sunday, April 7, that vigilant officers uncovered a false bottom concealment of drugs both in the suspect's check-in luggage and within the walls of his backpack during a thorough search.
The swift response of NDLEA officers led to the apprehension of another individual, identified as Ishola Isiaka Olalekan, who accompanied the suspect to the airport and was later determined to be the recruiter responsible for enlisting the trafficker.
Imran Taofeek Olalekan, upon interrogation, disclosed that he had returned from Dubai several years ago but retained a valid residence permit on his old passport. He claimed to have been promised N1,500,000 upon successful delivery of the consignment in Oman, with his recruiter, Ishola, slated to receive N200,000.
Upon further investigation, NDLEA officers uncovered charms in both bags, with the drug mule admitting to seeking the assistance of an 'Alfa' in Ibadan, Oyo State, to ensure his safe passage without detection. Ishola Isiaka Olalekan, the intermediary, also possessed a charm procured for N70,000.
The discovery of these charms underscores the lengths to which traffickers are willing to go to evade law enforcement and highlights the intricate networks involved in drug trafficking operations.
The NDLEA's successful interception serves as a testament to the agency's commitment to combating drug-related crimes and ensuring the safety and security of air travel within Nigeria and beyond.
