In a development at the Abuja Chief Magistrate Court in Wuse Zone 6 on Monday, social media content creator Mr. Chizorom Harrison Ofoegbu, popularly known as Ijele Speaks, faced further remand at the Keffi Correctional Center amid allegations of cybercrimes.
Chief Magistrate Emmanuel Iyanna presided over the proceedings, ordering Ofoegbu's continued custody until April 12, pending the court's decision on his bail application.
The Nigeria Police Force is prosecuting the blogger over charges including criminal intimidation, threat to life, cyberstalking, and cyberbullying, allegedly directed towards the founder and spiritual director of Zion Prayer Movement, Evangelist Ebuka Obi.
During Monday's hearing, counsel representing Ofoegbu, Mr. Marvin Omorogbe, petitioned the court to set aside the remand order and secure his client's release, citing purported misrepresentations by the police regarding the filing of criminal charges against the defendant.
Omorogbe contended that the police had misled the court into granting the remand order by falsely claiming to have initiated proceedings at the Federal High Court in Abuja.
However, police lawyer Mr. Obiora Ejiofor opposed the bail application, asserting that the Magistrate Court lacked jurisdiction to handle the charges against Ofoegbu. Ejiofor emphasized the police's readiness to arraign the defendant at the Federal High Court once a date is set.
In response, Omorogbe challenged the authenticity of exhibits presented by the police, alleging forgery and asserting that the remand order had lapsed.
The court adjourned the matter for ruling after considering arguments from both sides.
Ofoegbu's arrest stemmed from allegations of threatening Evangelist Ebuka Obi's life in a video posted on his Facebook page, where he purportedly made violent remarks. Additionally, he allegedly defamed Obi by accusing him of criminal activities and deceitful practices within Zion Prayer Movement.
The police acted on a petition regarding these alleged offenses, leading to Ofoegbu's detention in Abuja pending further legal proceedings.
