In a dramatic turn of events in Ondo State, a member of a notorious kidnapping gang reportedly attacked a fellow gang member with a machete in a bid to prevent the exposure of their identities to law enforcement authorities. This incident was disclosed by Chief Adetunji Adeleye, the Commander of the Western Nigeria Security Network, also known as Amotekun, during the parade of 45 suspected criminals in Akure, the state capital.

The attack on the gang member came to light as the Ondo State government initiated an amnesty program for certain suspected criminals deemed first-time offenders and charged with non-violent crimes. The aim is to reintegrate these individuals into society following a stern warning against future criminal activities.

Among the suspects paraded, the lineup included 14 kidnappers, highlighting the pervasive issue of kidnapping in the region. Additionally, individuals were apprehended for various other crimes ranging from dangerous driving and burglary to violations of anti-grazing laws and disturbances of public peace.

Chief Adeleye revealed that the amnesty was granted in line with the festive spirit and on the directive of the Governor. A total of 28 individuals, having been assessed as first-time offenders whose crimes did not carry capital punishment, were to be released for rehabilitation.

However, the situation took a serious turn with the discovery of an internal conflict within a kidnapping syndicate operating across Akoko Local Government Area, and extending their criminal activities to neighboring Kogi and Edo states. The conflict ensued when one of the gang members, having renounced his criminal ways, was attacked by another member in an attempt to prevent him from divulging information to the authorities.

The victim of the attack was promptly provided medical treatment by Amotekun officers and has since provided valuable information regarding the gang's operations. According to Adeleye, efforts are now underway to dismantle the syndicate completely and apprehend its sponsors who remain at large.

This incident underscores the challenges faced by security agencies in tackling organized crime and the lengths to which criminals will go to protect their interests. As the state continues to clamp down on criminal activities, the public is reassured of heightened security measures, especially during the festive season.
