
In a crackdown on utility infrastructure vandalism, the Abuja police have apprehended six individuals, including a staff member of the Abuja Electricity Distribution Company (AEDC), for their alleged involvement in the theft of a transformer. The arrests were made late Tuesday evening in the Maitama area of Abuja.
The suspects, identified by FCT Police spokesperson SP Josephine Adeh as Raymond Mailabari, an AEDC employee, and five others: Kabiru Muhammed, Aliyu Usman, Abdulmalik Alhassan, Shafi’u Suleiman, and Suleiman Ibrahim, were reportedly caught while attempting to transport the stolen transformer. The group, all residents of Tipper Garage, Mpape, were arrested around 10:45 PM following a tip-off to police.
SP Adeh detailed the recovery at the scene: "The police seized a vandalized transformer, a crane truck used in the operation, a blue-colored Mercedes Benz with registration number PKN 497 XA, a white-colored J5 bus with registration number RBC 228 XC, and an ash-colored Peugeot 406 car with registration number GSN 13 AA, which belongs to the AEDC staff involved."
The FCT Police Command, under the leadership of Commissioner of Police CP Benneth C. Igweh, expressed its dedication to tackling crime and ensuring the safety of public and private property across the capital territory. CP Igweh also urged the public to remain vigilant and report any suspicious activities using the police emergency lines provided.
The ongoing investigation seeks to unravel further details about the operation and prevent future incidents of similar nature. The incident highlights the ongoing challenges faced by utility providers in securing critical infrastructure.
