The Lagos State Police Command has apprehended a man accused of stealing an Uber car from its driver under deceptive circumstances.
SP Benjamin Hundeyin, spokesperson for the command, confirmed the arrest on Saturday following a report received by the Akinpelu Police Division on July 5 around 8:00 pm. The report was made by an Uber driver, whose identity was not disclosed.
According to Hundeyin, the driver stated that he had picked up a passenger named Isaiah from the NNPC Filling Station in Maryland. The journey was supposed to end at a hotel in Oshodi, where the suspect, during a stop, treated the driver to a meal of pepper soup and an energy drink.
"In a moment of distraction, while the suspect purportedly searched for a cotton bud to clean his ear, the driver handed over his car key for temporary use," Hundeyin explained.
The driver reported that after receiving the key, the suspect allegedly absconded with the Toyota Corolla from its parking spot at the hotel. Fortunately, police officers conducting a routine stop and search operation on Boladale Street intercepted the suspect.
"Upon questioning, the suspect failed to provide satisfactory ownership details of the vehicle, leading to his arrest," Hundeyin added.
As police prepared to transport the suspect to the station, the driver arrived at the scene and identified his car. The suspect remains in custody pending further investigation into the incident.
The Lagos State Police Command urges the public to remain vigilant and cautious while interacting with strangers, emphasizing the importance of safeguarding personal property and maintaining security measures at all times.
