The Edo State Police Command has arrested three suspected cultists in possession of a lethal automatic pump-action gun valued at N700,000.
The suspects, identified as Eyefia Godbless (30), Imuetiyan Ewemade (30), and Emeka Okpaja (22), are alleged members of the Maphite confraternity. State Commissioner of Police, Funsho Adegboye, disclosed that the trio was apprehended in Ubiaza Community, off Sapele Road in Benin City. They were reportedly planning to avenge the killing of one of their members, known as Kokori, who was allegedly murdered by the rival Aye confraternity in June 2024.
"This automatic pump-action gun is as deadly as an AK-47, capable of causing multiple fatalities with a single shot," said Commissioner Adegboye. "The suspects revealed that the weapon was purchased for around N700,000. Despite their claim of registering their organization in Edo State, their activities remain illegal and proscribed. We will not tolerate this in our state. We have arrested these individuals and will continue to apprehend more in our ongoing fight against cultism."
Items recovered from the suspects include one automatic pump-action gun, 11 live cartridges, three green berets, and the Maphite constitution.
