Collins Emeka Orji, a fake medical practitioner running a medical facility in Ngarabe, Ekureku, Abi Local Government Area, has been apprehended by the police and remanded at the Obubra Correctional Centre. This action follows an order from the Magistrate Court in Itigidi, Abi LGA.
Vanguard reports that Orji operated Excellent Hospital in Ngarabe, Ekureku, without any licenses for himself or the facility. The Cross River State Task Force on Health Quality and Anti-Quackery, during a visit to his facility on July 11, 2024, discovered the malpractice.
Further investigations revealed that Orji had previously operated other unlicensed medical facilities, including St. Collins Hospital in Ugep and Common Wealth Clinic in Ibogo, Biase LGA.
Dr. Dan Abubakar, Head of the Cross River State Task Force on Health Quality and Anti-Quackery, stated that Orji was found without any medical qualifications or training.
“When the task force, accompanied by police officers from Itigidi, arrived at the facility and interacted with Orji, it was discovered that he was not a medical doctor and had no medical training,” Abubakar said.
The task force found that Orji had no license to practice medicine and surgery in Nigeria, had not attended any medical institution, yet performed surgical operations in his consulting room. The facility also lacked qualified nursing staff, with two young girls posing as nurses, who admitted they had no nursing training and were only volunteers after dropping out of secondary school.
Dr. Abubakar confirmed, "Since he had no registrable credentials with the Medical & Dental Council of Nigeria, we sealed Excellent Hospital, Ngarabe, Ekureku, before taking him to the police station in Itigidi."
Orji was granted bail after appearing before the magistrate court but was unable to meet the bail conditions. He remains in custody at the Obubra Correctional Centre, with the next court hearing scheduled for August 9, 2024.
