A devastating fire engulfed a parish of the Christ Apostolic Church in Ibadan, Oyo State, on Friday night, trapping several worshippers and causing widespread panic.
The fire broke out at approximately 9:30 pm during a vigil at the church, located at Wisdom Estate, Road 1G, Olohunda Road, in the Lagelu Local Government Area. Eyewitnesses reported that some worshippers were resting in preparation for the vigil when the blaze erupted.
One source described the chaotic scene, saying, “The fire started while people were sleeping inside the church. An elderly woman, who could barely move, was still inside as the fire raged.”
Another witness confirmed that people were still trapped inside the building as the fire intensified. "I’ll provide more details later," said a church member who declined to give their name.
The General Manager of the Oyo State Fire Services, Akinyemi Akinyinka, confirmed the incident, stating, “Our team responded to a distress call from one Kunle Junaid. Investigations into the cause of the fire are ongoing.”
As of the time of this report, the extent of casualties or damages remains unclear, with officials promising further updates.
