Gunmen killed two police officers early Thursday morning in Okigwe Local Government Area of Imo State, located in southeast Nigeria. The attack occurred around 6 a.m. at Umuluole Junction along the Okigwe-Umuahia Expressway.
According to reports, a group of 25 armed assailants opened fire on the police operatives who were on routine patrol, resulting in the immediate deaths of two officers, including an inspector. The attackers also set fire to the officers' pickup truck and stole three AK-47 rifles from the scene.
Sources indicate that the identities of the slain officers are known, but their names have been withheld until their families are notified.
The police spokesperson for Imo State, Assistant Superintendent of Police Henry Okoye, confirmed the incident and issued a statement on Friday. Okoye reported that the Commissioner of Police in the state, Aboki Danjuma, had dispatched tactical units to track down the perpetrators and vowed to bring them to justice.
“The Commissioner of Police emphasized the command’s commitment to restoring security in the area and ensuring those responsible are held accountable,” Okoye stated.
Following the attack, the police commissioner visited the scene with other local officials, including the Chairperson of Okigwe Local Government Area, Nkechi Mbonu. Mbonu reassured residents of the state's continued support for law enforcement and promised ongoing logistical assistance to enhance security.
Muhazu Mohammed, the Sariki Hausawa of Gariki Market, also pledged to cooperate with security agencies and provide crucial information to ensure public safety.
The attack comes amid rising insecurity in Imo State, with frequent assaults targeting law enforcement, government officials, and facilities. While the Nigerian government has blamed the separatist group IPOB for these attacks, IPOB has denied any involvement. The group, which advocates for the creation of an independent Biafra, has been a central figure in the region's security concerns.
As investigations continue, authorities are working to maintain peace and safety for the residents of Okigwe and the surrounding areas.
