The FRSC Sector Commander in Osun, Mr Sunday Maku, said this in an interview with the News Agency of Nigeria (NAN) on Wednesday in Osogbo.
NAN reports that some hospitals and health centres in the area were reportedly turning down requests to treat accident victims and those with gunshot injuries over fears that some patients may be suspected robbers.
But Maku said that in spite of the doubtful nature of an incident, hospitals must endeavour to treat patients brought to them
The FRSC boss said such hospitals were expected to keep treatment forms for accident victims which a doctor must fill in order to have a record of the condition of patients when they were brought in.
According to him, details of the condition of the accident victims, including their particulars and the circumstances surrounding the incident, will be stated in the form.
The form, he added, should be forwarded to the police for further investigation, especially if there was cause for suspicion
Maku said the duty of the FRSC was to ensure accident-free roads, adding that the commission had no role in the treatment of victims.
Mr Ayo Adeyemo, the Public Relations Officer of Ladoke Akintola University of Technology Teaching Hospital, Osogbo said the institution’s mandate was to save lives first while other enquiries would follow.
Adeyemo, however, explained that law enforcement agents often accompanied victims brought to the hospital for treatment.
“If an accident victim is brought to the hospital by just anybody, especially in a case of gunshot wounds, we have to get in touch with the police immediately as we embark on treatment,’’ he said.
Efforts made to speak with the spokesman of the State Police Command, Mr Taiwo Olugbemileke, failed as he was said to be unavailable. (NAN)
