Police have launched a probe into the operation of a 'fake' branch of Nigerian televangelist, Prophet TB Joshua. Scores of people recently besieged a Sunridge office used by the disused SCOAN branch demanding their money back. They had been made to pay thousands of dollars after being promised a trip to Nigeria for a date with Prophet TB Joshua.
Harare provincial police spokesperson, Inspector James Sabau confirmed the developments.
"We received reports concerning the people who were demanding their money after their failure to be facilitated trips to see TB Joshua in Nigeria. Police made arrests before releasing the staff after discovering that the accused was in South Africa. At the moment, police are investigating the case to find if there is any element of fraud after discovering that the complainants had not been given dates of visiting TB Joshua," said Sabau.
The disowned branch was located at No. 42 Goodrington in Sunridge and was being run by a man of Dutch origin identified as Eric along with a local, Shaleen Manhiri. The two have since left the country and reports say they have settled in South Africa. Eric and Shaleen are reported to have referred the duped people to their legal practitioner following reports that TB Joshua was to visit Harare. Some of the affected followers said they have been advised to apply for their refunds from Chara and Associates Legal practitioners located at parks House.
"From January, after it came to light that they were operating without the blessings of TB Joshua, we never got our money back. We have been advised not to visit Sunridge offices but to apply for refunds at Chara and Associates Legal Practitioners. Now that TB Joshua is said to be coming to Harare, there is no need to leave our money with them for a trip to Nigeria. They have made profit from us and bout properties by duping us of our hard earned cash. Where is the money they were collecting from people which they claim today that they do not have after we paid the money and got receipts?" said one victim.
Shaleen's workers at the Sunridge offices, Sithembeni Nyanzira and one Winnie, are said to be in hiding. The disgruntled people took their matter to Malbereign police station where dockets have been opened.
"Most of the duped people are making reports with Marbereign Police and from the message I have received from one of the affected I am going there with my receipt," said the victim.
When we visited Chara and Associated legal practitioners offices at park House, the duped clients were still milling around to see one Mrs Machaya who is said to be handling the issue. A receptionist said: "Mrs Machaya is the one who is dealing with that issue and is the only person who can comment over that story, but at the moment she is not available. She is not feeling well today (yesterday)."
