NASU begins strike at Ile-Ife varsity

Written by Abdul-Hameed Olawale, Osogbo    Friday, 29 June 2012

Academic activities were paralyzed at Obafemi Awolowo University (OAU), Ile-Ife yesterday as members of the Non-Academic Staff Union (NASU) embarked on an indefinite strike to press home their demands.

It was learnt that the union members did not allow vehicular movement in and out of the campus. They also prevented academic activities from taking place, including examination as the main entrance gate was barricaded.

The union is demanding, among others, for 15% salary increase on HATISS, 10% security incentive allowance, six-month salary arrears, two steps differential between teaching and non-teaching staff, pension deduction, resuscitation of 13th month salary, disparity on number of years of promotion, implementation and payment of hazard allowance.

But the Vice-Chancellor of the university, Professor Bamitale Omale, accused the leadership of NASU of plotting to kidnap him and other principal officers of the university, a claim that was denied by NASU.

The vice chancellor said the strike was meant to blackmail the university’s management to pay some illegal allowances not backed up by Federal Government circulars.

However, NASU Chairman, Comrade Odewumi, said the vice chancellor gave a flimsy excuse and that there was no going back on the strike they had commenced.
