In many African countries, it is illegal to be gay. 25 out of 38 African nations have passed laws that give varying degrees of prison sentences to people caught practicing homosegxwal acts. In Nigeria, a 14-year jail term is prescribed for convicted offenders under the Same Sex Marriage (prohibition) bill which was passed into law in 2011.

These laws have received mixed reactions from Africans across the continent. While some have lauded it in countries where they have been passed, others have said there are more important things to focus on and an individual’s segxwality should not be subject to scrutiny and punishment.

At the recent Pan African Parliament in Johannesburg on 9th October, 2012, the topic of imprisonment of homosegxwals in Africa was again raised.

A Ugandan lawmaker, Atim Ogwal Cecilia Barbara called for the life imprisonment of all African gay people.

SABC reports her comments at the Parliament: “Africa must stand up. We must pass a resolution condemning homosegxwality because it is not an African culture. We are not allowed to practice polygamy in other countries, why should we be forced to do what is not natural?”

Homosegxwality which is already illegal under Uganda’s penal code, is highly stigmatized in Uganda. The country has one of the strictest Anti-Homosegxwality Bill often called the “Kill the Gays bill”. It divides homosegxwal behavior into two categories: “aggravated homosegxwality”, in which an offender would receive the death penalty, or “the offense of homosegxwality” in which an offender would receive life imprisonment.

Although she failed to convince other lawmakers and her proposal was rejected, she once again brought to the fore, Africa’s standpoint against homosegxwality.

As a continent, do you think we are treading on the right path with respect to enacting laws against homosegxwality? Did the lawmaker go too far with her suggestion?

Imprisoning makes it worse. That's where they can practise it even more, unless of cause they are held in solitary confinement. But this too will be very expensive as the infrastructure needs to be renovated to single cells to avoid perpetuating the behaviour.

This issue needs a more pragmatic approach rather than ministers and governments uttering rubbish without considering the enabling factors and the toll on the taxpayer.

I quite feel the pains of the Ugandan Lawmakers about this Western homosegxwality syndrome that is gradually becoming a pandemic. In as much as i agree that the act of homosegxwality should be strongly condemned all across Africa, but we as a people with great wisdom and intelligence should also understand that this is a disease of the mind, it is a psychological disease that is reversible. Therefore, the calling for life imprisonment for homosegxwals won't put an end to the act. I'll advise that anyone who is a victim of this human abnormality should be forced into a homosegxwal rehab centres, where they can get therapeutic treatments and care. Let's not forget that these people are just humans like us, but unfortunately for them, they fell into one of the many snares of the enemy. Finally, i think homosegxwal victims need our help and not persecution. I believe their ill-infected psychics can be detox of the mental virus.

A NIGERIAN WRITES FROM FINLAND...

"....FOR THE FACT THAT SUCH ACT IS SEEN ON TV, TALKED ON RADIO, AND OPENLY PRACTICED IN THE WEST, IT DOESN'T MEAN THAT WE SHOULD BRING THEM TO OUR WELL CULTURAL-CONTINENT OF AFRICA TO PRACTICE. OUR HOMELAND AFRICA IS MORE CULTURED, MORE CIVILIZED, MORE GODLY THAN THE WEST IN THAT RESPECT BECAUSE IT IS AN ABOMINATION IN THE SITE OF GOD ALMIGHTY. THEY CAN PRACTICE SUCH IN THE WEST IT'S OK WITH THEM, BUT IN AFRICA IT IS NOT OBTAINABLE. WE ARE CULTURALLY STRUCTURE PEOPLE. IT IS AGAINST GOD AND IT IS AGAINST OUR CULTURE AS AFRICANS..."

It may not be part of your culture but it exists, has always existed, and will always exist.

And homosegxwality is neither a disease nor reversible.

Who the heck are you to be vomiting such filth on this site? If the diseases of homosegxwality is part of your culture, then good for you and yours. But  please do me and my beloved people a favour by keeping this despicable practice within your people. Humans should strive for morality and not immorality. Thank you!
