Dr. Bukola Saraki, the Executive Governor of Kwara State has called for members of professional bodies to be co-opted  in the administration of elections in Nigeria. Speaking at a stakeholders forum on continuous voter registration organized by INEC in Ilorin, he also declared his support for the decision of INEC to abandon the use of ad hoc staff in the conduct of the 2011 polls.

He counseled that instead of using ad hoc staff, the election body (INEC) should continue with the use of members of the National Youth Service Corps, and members of professional bodies such as the Nigerian Bar Association, Nigerian Medical Association, and the Nigerian Society of Engineers, which he observed are recognized and credible groups. He said:

“One is particularly happy that the INEC has resolved not to use ad hoc staff again in the conduct of future elections, but corp members, and employees of recognized agencies, who can easily be identified and traced to their respective organizations.”

He further emphasized the importance of continuous voter registration, saying that in order for votes to count, the voter register must be put right.
