Members of the Edo State House of Assembly expressed concern on Tuesday about the resurgence of secret cult-related killings in the state.

The lawmakers urged the state government and relevant security agencies to put a stop to the killings and bring the perpetrators to justice as soon as possible.

Frank Omosigho (PDP, Oredo East) raised the alarm after moving a motion under matters of urgent public importance.

Moving the motion, Omosighon informed the house that seven young men had been killed in various locations across the state in the previous week.

NAN quoted him as saying: “Two young men were killed in Amagba; another was shot dead while worshipping in the church; and some others were killed in Egor and Auchi. The rate of wanton killings among secret cult groups in Edo is worrisome and portends grave danger to the lives of the citizens.”

While condemning the senseless killings by suspected cultists, Omosigho urged the state government to investigate the causes of the killings and put an end to them.

Other lawmakers who spoke on the issue urged the DSS to be more proactive in gathering information in order to nip security issues in the bud before they worsened.

The lawmakers subsequently passed a resolution requesting that the state commissioner of police and all security agencies intervene in the matter to ensure the safety of people and property.

The Speaker, Blessing Agbebaku, said: “The senseless killing is worrisome. No one has the right to take a life he or she did not create.”

Agbebaku then directed the clerk of the house, Yahaya Omogbai, to forward copies of the resolution to the appropriate authorities for action.

The house also received a letter signed by the Secretary to the State Government (SSG), Osarodion Ogie, requesting confirmation of Daniel Okungbowa’s appointment as the substantive Chief Judge of Edo State.

The Speaker then referred the letter to the House Rules and Business Committee and the Judiciary Committee to screen the nominee.
