In a decisive move against organized crime, the National Drug Law Enforcement Agency (NDLEA) has initiated a crackdown on a sophisticated criminal network responsible for the recent smuggling of illicit drugs and arms into Nigeria. The operation, which involved the importation of two containers loaded with narcotics and assorted weapons from Durban, South Africa to the Tincan seaport in Lagos, has led to several arrests and significant seizures.

According to a press statement by NDLEA spokesperson Femi Babafemi, key members of the syndicate have been apprehended. Among them are Falowo Samuel Kayode, identified as the clearing and notify party for the two containers, Anjorin Idowu, a dock worker, and Uzairu Ahmed Iguda, who oversees operations at the Five Star terminal where the illicit shipments were discovered. However, Mohammed Muktar Sule, also known as "organizer," remains at large and is being pursued by law enforcement.

The NDLEA's intervention followed intelligence reports prompting a thorough examination of the containers labeled MSCU 4581770 and TRHU 7968071 upon arrival from South Africa. During the inspection conducted on January 18th and 19th, 2024, authorities uncovered 56.39kg of cocaine, 795kg of Colorado (a potent strain of synthetic cannabis), and other contraband items concealed within.

In response to the alarming findings, NDLEA Chairman and Chief Executive Officer, Brig Gen Mohamed Buba Marwa (Retd), issued a directive for a comprehensive investigation into the smuggling operation. Subsequent efforts by specialized units of the agency led to the discovery of additional contraband, including 192.7kg of Colorado, a pistol, and ammunition hidden in an empty container at the Five Star terminal. Iguda and Idowu were arrested in connection with this latest seizure, implicating them in the conspiracy to transport and conceal illegal goods.

Investigations have revealed a coordinated effort among the arrested suspects and Kayode, the clearing agent, to divert the illicit cargo from the original containers to evade detection. The involvement of dock workers in the scheme underscores the complicity of individuals within the port's operational infrastructure.

The NDLEA remains committed to dismantling criminal networks involved in drug trafficking and arms smuggling, emphasizing the importance of collaboration with other law enforcement agencies and stakeholders to ensure the security and integrity of Nigeria's borders. As efforts to apprehend remaining suspects intensify, the agency urges the public to remain vigilant and report any suspicious activities that may undermine national security.
