In a continued effort to enforce sanitation laws and maintain public hygiene, Lagos State authorities have arrested nine individuals for engaging in open defecation in the Berger area. The arrests were made on Friday by officials from the Lagos State Environmental Sanitation Corps, according to Tokunbo Wahab, the Commissioner for Environment and Water Resources.
Wahab announced the arrests in a post on X.com (formerly Twitter) on Saturday, emphasizing the state’s commitment to eradicating unsanitary practices.
This enforcement action follows a similar crackdown the previous night, during which 17 people were apprehended for open urination, defecation, and failure to use the pedestrian bridge in the same area.
The Lagos State government has adopted a zero-tolerance policy towards open defecation as part of its broader strategy to promote a cleaner, healthier, and more sustainable environment. In line with this initiative, the Lagos State Ministry of Environment and Water Resources has also launched a cleanup of the Ojodu-Berger highway median.
These efforts underscore the state's determination to improve public health and hygiene, ensuring that residents adhere to sanitation laws designed to enhance the quality of life in Lagos.
