A devastating fire engulfed a two-storey building at 21 Oduntan Street, Mushin, Lagos State, on Saturday, destroying properties worth millions of naira.
The inferno, which affected two 3-bedroom flats on the building's second floor, reportedly began in the front flat and quickly spread to the back flat.
The fire erupted in the afternoon but was eventually extinguished through the swift efforts of the Lagos State Fire and Rescue Service, the Lagos State Emergency Management Agency (LASEMA), and other first responders, including the Nigeria Police.
According to Olufemi Oke-Osanyintolu, Permanent Secretary of LASEMA, preliminary investigations revealed that the fire was caused by a gas leak from a cylinder in one of the flats.
Fortunately, no lives were lost, and no injuries were reported.
“The prompt response of LASEMA’s Eagle Response Team, alongside the LRU Fire Unit and other responders, prevented the fire from spreading to nearby buildings. The Nigeria Police ensured the scene was secured and managed crowd control,” Oke-Osanyintolu stated.
While the blaze destroyed the building's roof, ceilings, and most of the occupants' belongings, firefighters discovered valuables and cash during their operations, which were promptly returned to their owners at the scene.
Oke-Osanyintolu further disclosed that occupants were educated on safety measures, including proper gas cylinder usage and electrical appliance maintenance, to avoid future incidents.
This incident underscores the critical need for heightened safety awareness, particularly in densely populated areas like Mushin.
