A tragic incident unfolded on Saturday evening in the Onipanu area of Lagos State, when a driver allegedly ran over a pedestrian, leading to his death and sparking a violent mob reaction.
Eyewitness Akeem Suleimon recounted that the driver was speeding excessively when he struck the pedestrian at around 8:30 pm on Awoyokun Road, near Onipanu. The force of the collision resulted in the immediate death of the victim.
Suleimon described the driver’s actions as careless, stating, "The driver was clearly speeding and hit the pedestrian, killing him instantly." The vehicle, a Toyota Venza with the registration number EKY 839 HU, was later set on fire by an angry mob after the driver narrowly escaped a lynching.
Femi Oke-Osanyintolu, the Permanent Secretary of the Lagos State Emergency Management Agency (LASEMA), confirmed the incident. Preliminary investigations by LASEMA’s Response Team indicated that the driver lost control while speeding, hitting the male pedestrian who was crossing the road.
"The pedestrian, a yet-to-be-identified adult male, died at the scene," Oke-Osanyintolu said. "His body was removed before our team arrived. The situation was further escalated by miscreants, who vandalized the vehicle and set it on fire."
LASEMA’s Cobra Response Team was dispatched with the appropriate equipment to handle the recovery of the vehicle.
In response to the chaos, armed police officers from the Lagos State Police Command arrived at the scene to restore order and facilitate the recovery of the vehicle.
