The Senate Committee on Education has expressed doubt about the feasibility of Nigeria’s desire to attain its mass literacy goals by 2015.

Vice-Chairman of the committee, Prof. Olusola Adeyeye, said this while responding to a presentation by the Executive Secretary of the National Commission for Mass Literacy, Adult and Non-Formal Education, Alhaji Jibrin Paiko, in Abuja, on Monday.

He noted that there was little on the ground to suggest that Nigeria would meet the three-year deadline.

Adeyeye said, “This mass literacy thing is not new in Nigeria.

“We had it when churches and mosques were turned into evening classes. That’s where my father and mother learnt how to read in the 50s. It did not involve one penny of government funds.

“That you are going to solve this problem by 2015- three years, it’s a lie. Let us go back to the churches and mosques and civic centres.”

Earlier, Paiko said the commission had problems getting the states to buy into some of its programmes.

Paiko said the N1bn earmarked for its programmes was inadequate.

He said, “One billion Naira is small if we say we will use it from our calculations with UNESCO, it will only provide for about four million learners in the next four years.”
