It was also gathered that the unknown gunmen and their perceived sponsors had also threatened to launch another attack against the community.

OML29 is a large block containing 11 oil and gas fields which stretches over an area of 983 square kilometres including the Nembe Oil Field, Santa Barbara Oil Field and Okoroba Oil Fields. It also includes related facilities like the Nembe Creek Trunk Line NCTL.

Meanwhile, the state government has halted the spread of the lingering intra-communal clash in Nembe-bassambiri in Nembe Local Government Area of the State with the imposition of a dusk to dawn curfew in the oil rich area.

In a reaction to the development, the state government through the office of the State Commissioner of Information, Orientation and Strategy on Wednesday announced the imposition of a dusk to dawn curfew to avert bloodshed.

According to the statement signed by Hon. Ayibaina Duba, the decision is to avert the breakdown of law and order, “the Bayelsa state government has imposed a dusk to dawn curfew on two warring communities of Bassambiri and Ogbolomabiri all in Nembe local government area.”

While confirming the killing of one person in the crisis, the Bayelsa Information Commissioner, said the curfew became necessary owing to reports of violent crises which the government fears might lead to a “breach of public peace” in both towns.

“The curfew which takes effect from Wednesday, 14th July 2021, shall be enforced from 6 pm to 6 am daily, until the security situation improves. Residents of Nembe and aggrieved individuals in the area to allow peace to reign by seeking civilized alternatives to resolving whatever might have caused the recent unfortunate situation,” he said.
