In a significant crackdown on drug trafficking, the Liberia Drugs Enforcement Agency (LDEA) has arrested nine Nigerian nationals and two Liberians suspected of operating a drug cartel in Sayon Town on Bushrod Island.

The operation, led by the newly confirmed LDEA boss, Col. Abraham Kromah, took place on Wednesday afternoon, February 21, 2024, amidst cheers from residents who viewed the arrests as a significant milestone in the nation's fight against drug abuse.

Among those apprehended were two Liberian females, Hawa Tamba, 28, and Shelly Sheaton, 17, accused of facilitating the illicit drug trade in the community.

The Nigerian suspects under investigation include George Ikpechukwu, alias "Original Japan," identified as an auto-parts dealer, and Mr. Sunday Odeh, along with Peter Momat, Edwin Ozioko, Brigston Harris, Iglwe David, Ndubuis Okoronkwo, China Ekwe, and Efam Jamo.

According to Col. Kromah, the suspects were tracked down following a tip-off received from an unnamed whistleblower. They were found in possession of a substantial quantity of cocaine, heroin, and tramadol, with an estimated value of approximately Five Million Liberian dollars.

Col. Kromah emphasized the agency's commitment to combating illicit drug trade, urging the government to allocate more resources to support LDEA operations.

Residents of Sayon Town expressed relief at the successful operation, citing concerns over increased criminal activities linked to drug abuse in their community.

Meanwhile, suspect George Ikpechukwu, also known as "Original Japan," maintained his innocence, denying any involvement in the alleged drug cartel. He called for a thorough investigation into the matter.

Col. Kromah assured the public of continued efforts to prosecute those involved in drug trafficking, underscoring the importance of collaboration between law enforcement agencies and the community in the fight against narcotics trade.
