The Cross River State Police Command has apprehended three suspected armed robbers in Calabar, following a swift response to a distress call from a motorist on September 2, 2024.
The command's spokesperson, SP Irene Ugbo, disclosed in a statement on Friday that operational weapons, including locally made short guns, were recovered during the operation.
According to the statement, the motorist, traveling from Ikom to Calabar, reported being ambushed by a group of armed robbers who blocked the federal highway near Iwuru village in Akamkpa Local Government Area. The robbers reportedly made away with valuables worth ₦455,000.
Upon receiving the call, officers from the Command’s Anti-Cultism and Kidnapping Squad (ACKS) in Uyanga quickly mobilized to the scene. Using intelligence, they tracked the suspects to their hideout, where three male suspects—Sunday Sunday Udo, 27; Godday Friday Essien, 22; and Kufre Edet Umoren, 33—were arrested.
During the operation, police recovered a locally made short gun, three machetes, and a short iron pipe. The suspects remain in custody and will face prosecution following the conclusion of investigations.
Reacting to the arrests, Cross River State Commissioner of Police, CP Gyogon Augustine Grimah, praised the officers for their swift action and urged residents to stay vigilant. He emphasized the importance of reporting suspicious activities and assured the public of continued efforts to ensure safety across the state.
CP Grimah also commended the cooperation between the police and the public, reaffirming the command's commitment to protecting lives and property in Cross River.
