A group, the International Society for Civil Liberties and the Rule of Law, has said more than 100 people have been killed in politically related violence over the past one year.

In a statement in Onitsha on Wednesday, the organisation said about 300 other people were critically injured since July last year in pre-election violence.

The statement was signed by the Chairman of the Board of Trustees of the Intersociety, Mr. Emeka Umeagbalasi.

The development came jsut as the Kwara State Police Command has declared 148 people wanted for their suspected involvement in political violence and disturbance of peace.

The Command’s Public Relations Officer, Mr. Ezekiel Dabo, gave the details in an interview with the News Agency of Nigeria in Ilorin on Wednesday.

He advised politicians against the use of thugs before, during and after next month’s general elections.

The figure is apart from about 22 persons that have been killed in the recent political violence across the country.

But the International Society for Civil Liberties and Rule of Law said the deaths did not include the ones arising from sectarian killings that rocked different parts of the North in recent time.

The group said, “The Amnesty International believes that between July 2010 and middle of March 2011, ‘at least, 50 people have been killed in election-related violence in Nigeria.

“But further findings by our leadership show that between March 15 and 22, 2011, more than 30 persons have been killed in different parts of the country.

“In the locally and internationally image-barren 2007 general elections, ‘at least, 300 people were killed’ (Human Rights Watch).

”Some of these killings include the followings: January 9, 2011, four persons were killed in the home town of a former presidential aide and the Labour Party governorship candidate in Bayelsa State Mr. Timi Alaibe, during a campaign rally; January 28, 2011, the All Nigeria Peoples Party governorship candidate in Borno State, Mr. Fannami Gubio, and seven others, including Alhaji Godi Modu Sherrif and a 10-year-old boy, were shot dead near a Mosque in Maiduguiri, Borno State.”
