TWO persons, including a pastor and a politician, believed to be a chieftain of the ruling Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) in Igbo-Eze South Local Government Area of Enugu State were beaten to stupor on Saturday for allegedly attempting to smuggle some electoral materials from the police station at Ibagwa-Aka shortly before the National Assembly polls were postponed.
It was learnt that the cars in which the said materials were discovered by vigilant members of some opposition parties who had gathered at the police station for the distribution of the electoral materials were also badly damaged.
As a result of the incident, an angry mob went to town and destroyed some of Governor Sullivan Chime's election billboards in the area.
Another politician was also brutalised at Alor-Agu in the same Igboeze South Local Government Area of the state.
The victim whose head was battered by his assailants was said to be a member of one of the opposition parties and might have challenged certain politicians over the handling of electorial materials.
Nigerian Tribune gathered that some supporters of the opposition parties' candidates had mounted a vigilance group to ensure that electoral materials were not smuggled.
However, sources disclosed that some vital electoral materials were discovered both in the pastor's car and that of the politician when they tried to drive away from the police station to an unknown destination.
When contacted on the development, the State Police Public Relations Officer, Mr. Ebere Amarizu, said he was yet to be briefed on the matter.
