Nigeria, Asylum, and The United States

As an immigration attorney many Nigerians have recently asked me if the current election unrest in the country could lead to possible asylum cases in the United States.

Although unrest is occurring in certain parts of the country, it does not appear to be as widespread as other nations. A well founded fear of persecution needs to be established before you can seek asylum.

A case can be made for political asylum if you can show abuse at the hands of government officials, or rebels that are seeking to attack you based on your support of certain political figures.

What do you guys on here feel about the current political climate in Nigeria?

So as an immigration attorney you are one way or the other trying to encourage Nigerians to seek assylum in the US. Isn't it?

It is not good and is spreading towards the south as people try to escape.  My husband was robbed twice by gunpoint and the embassy still did not see it as an emergency to rush his visa to the U.S.

This is not a good idea or good move, it is not encouraging, you want to become a voluntary slave before you get ur freedom.

Not sure if this was a retorical question or not, but I thought this was a forum to raise issues facing the Nigerian community.. As I stated this is a question I've recieved in recent weeks. I want to gauge the response from those in the forum.

The current situation in Nigeria though volatile cannot be used as a case for seeking Asylum in the US. The American Government is not gullible as most Nigerians think. The crises is the country has not become a full blown war. The US Government is watching and they gather intelligence daily. Cheers.
